Gilded Bronze Louis XVI Candleholders, Set of 2

Excellent pair of gilded bronze XVI candle chandelier after a model of Etienne Martincourt (master 1762 died after 1791): Lighter shank à l'Athénienne, consisting of three caryatides with ram heads and hoics, which on a curved round base with partially broken foliage and Pearl Fries Decor stand. In the middle of the caryatids there is a slim shaft to emerge the ivy. The arugal heads keep the egg-shaped candle grab relieved with akanthus leafwork with removable drip tray. Very rare pair of hero standing quality and beautiful, lively gilding with matts and polished games. After Etienne Martincourt had become Master in 1762, he was admitted to the Académie de Saint-Luc, the guild of the painter and sculptor. Membership in the guild of the bronze yard and in the Académie allows Martincourt to both design objects from gilded bronze as well. Without this double membership, he would have been occupied by the guilds with hard punishments. Many well-known collectors possessed Candlesticks of Martincourt, from the Duchess of Mazarin at the end of the 17th century to the Kaufmann Léopold Double at the end of the 19th century. In the time around 1800, some bronziers of Martincourt were inspired and made candlesticks, which are strongly oriented with its role models. Examples of his work can be seen in the Wallace Collection, Huntington Collection, the British Museum and the Getty Museum. The "Athénienne" form of this model is clearly back on Martincourt: It is well-famous design and a couple from his workshop is kept in the Wallace Collection in London. Condition: very good.
