About This Piece

Vintage Design

Large candlestick of French artist Louis Valentin Elias Robert (1821-1874) that we will choose to describe in three stages.

The central part is a patinated bronze representing an ancient woman with a signing silhouette and frizzy hair styled in a bun. She is dressed in a long tunic letting the shapes of her body and her bare feet guess. Helped with her left hand, she carries on her head a container with two handles which serves as the basis for the upper element of this property: a candelabra in six branches.

The latter, placed alternating on two different heights, are decorated with scrolls. Each is finished with a carved candle holder with pearl Bobèche. The central barrel, also worked, is crowned with a crane perched on a turtle and mastering a snake. Fine chaintes hanging from one branches to another come to enhance this candlestick part.

Finally, the whole rests on a round round base in black marble and grooves on its periphery.

Note on the intermediate pedestal of the caryatid, the inscription 'Lve Robert', signature of the pupil of David d'Angers and Pradier.
