Biedermeier Chair, Poland, 1840s

A classic of the Polish Biedermeier style. An original chair from around 1840, in a form typical of this style.

The noble design may be associated with the Polish bourgeois interior. Great craftsmanship and perfect condition prove its value.

The chair has a fairly simple, clear form. Gently curved, saber-shaped legs support the convex, comfortable seat. The slightly tilted backrest has a stylized, kidney-shaped shape, topped with a decorative, geometric palmette.

The tapestry with beige and pink stripes is decorated with rose motifs. Wood with a visible structure has a deep, warm, Cognac color. It is polished to a high gloss.

Biedermeier is a term that was used mainly to refer to the furniture and furnishings of burghers in the first half of the 19th century. Widespread in Central Europe, it also reached Poland. Biedermeier furniture is characterized by elegant simplicity as well as comfort and solidity of the structure. Ornamentation is restrained, often limited to stylized geometric elements and inlays. The Biedermeier interior is given a character by colorful upholstery materials in contrasting color combinations and embroidered with flowers.

The biggest invention of the Biedermeier creators is the upholstery with springs, which significantly increased the comfort of using the seats. This idea was patented in 1822 by a Viennese upholsterer - G. Junig.
