About This Piece

Bust of Marianne in patinated metal entitled "La République" according to the work of Théodore Doriot. This renowned sculptor, a student of Rude, began at the Salon des Artistes in 1868 and carried out this bust in 1880.

Marianne is wearing a vegetable wheat crown and carries a headband with the inscription "Honor and homeland". It is dressed in armor covered with a draped toga and a necklace with medallions representing the institutions highlighted by the Republic (agriculture, trade, fine arts, instruction, justice, science, marine and industry). On the base, the initials RF supervise the beams of a lictor (executive power) and a balance (justice).

Face chosen during the French Revolution to represent freedom and the Republic, Marianne is a strong symbol.

"The Republic" is an emblematic work, highlighting this national allegorical figure that is Marianne.
