Watercolour painting of a river scene dated 1972 by Admiral Sir Charles Madden (1906-2001) As the son of a First Sea Lord who had been Jellicoe's Chief-of-Staff at Jutland, even though Sir Charles Madden's first love was to be a painter, he inevitably found himself joining the British Navy.He joined the battleship Warspite at Alexandria in May 1940 and served with great distinction in many of the sea engagements of the Second World War.In 1953, Madden was appointed Chief of Naval Staff and First Naval Member of the New Zealand Navy Board, with the rank of Commodore.He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1955 and appointed Deputy to the Second Sea Lord.In all his high appointments, with a multitude of responsibilities and duties, Sir Charles Madden always kept up his painting. As C-in-C Plymouth from 1960 to 1962 he regularly exhibited with the Plymouth Art Club.Painted in 1972, it is framed and glazed.A few nicks to the frame as per its age. Please see photos.It's a Winter scene so the artist has chosen suitable wintry, cold colours to convey that feeling.This choice of colours also allows the lighter accents of river colour to convey movement.A magnificent and imposing piece of artwork from a very highly regarded artist.
