Very charming antique French portable travel crucifix/altar.
France - Paris 19th
Very beautiful leather case decorated with iron with a gold frame on the outside and inside.
The leather has a very nice diamond-shaped pattern on the back, where the fold-out backing is present and intact. Under the support, the label "A l'ange guardian - Pouget - Coulon & Roblon Paris" is still present and in very good condition. This label tells us the origin of this pretty travel reliquary. "A l'ange guardian" was a religious bookstore and objects of piety in the 19th century in Paris.
The interior is covered in gray silk and green velvet. The tang is slightly loose on the interior hinges.

The folding opening doors close with an attractive brass swivel latch lock. The cross is made of wood and Christ is made of bronze, the bronze scroll at the top of the cross reads I N R I.

I N R I is the acronym for the Latin words "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum", that is to say "Jesus the Nazarene king of the Jews", whom Pilate had put on the Cross.
